Best of Rio and Bahia

Departures: Brazil

Best of Rio and Bahia

We’d like to invite you to experience a few of our favorite spots in Brazil. Your trip starts in Rio, where the cariocas play, then on to Salvador where the rhythms of Afro-Brazilian music fill the air, then finish with the lushness and tranquility of the remote island of Boipeba. You’ll fall in love with Brazil just like we did!

Beneficiary

We believe that to travel responsibly, a portion of our tour cost should benefit the communities we visit. For this trip, we will donate to Bahia Street Brazil, an NGO that provides education, healthcare, food and counseling for girls from the slums of Salvador.

Itinerary

16 Days, 14 Nights

Day 1-2

Depart for Rio de Janeiro

Depart U.S and fly to Rio de Janeiro (lose one day due to time change & travel). Arrive Rio and transfer to a hotel in Copacabana, near Arpoador Beach. You’re in walking distance to Ipanema, in the heart of Rio’s southern district—filled with shops, restaurants, and near the Metro, which offers easy access to the city.

Day 2-5

Rio de Janeiro

Your tour of Rio includes all the must-see landmarks, including the statue of Christ the Redeemer, a cable car ride for sunset from Sugar Loaf Mountain and a walking tour of the historic city center.

And of course, no visit to Rio would be complete without an afternoon at Ipanema, Copacabana or Leblon beach for great people watching and a swim in the Atlantic—followed by an evening of live music in the Lapa district.

Day 5

Travel from Rio de Janeiro to Salvador

Fly from Rio to Salvador, Bahia—the sunny capital of Afro-Brazilian culture—that has been preserved and transformed into thriving culinary, religious, music, dance and martial arts experiences and festivals. Salvador’s rich history combines the sacred and secular into an exciting, vibrant mix. The historic center of Pelourinho where you’ll stay is a UNESCO World Heritage Site—a living museum of brightly colored colonial architecture, plazas, and cobble stoned streets, filled with street music, nightlife and restaurants. You’ll stay in the pedestrian heart of the Pelourinho, in one of the many beautifully restored buildings that house excellent hotels.

Day 5-10

Salvador

The focus of your 5-day stay in Salvador is all things cultural. You’ll have the opportunity to attend cooking classes, take a drumming lesson, as well as explore neighborhoods and restaurants featuring the fabulous flavors of this region.

Much of Bahian life revolves around the Afro-Brazilian religion Candomblé – and you’ll be able to visit a terreiro to get acquainted with the rituals that share the same African roots as Haitian Voudo and Cuban Santeria. You’ll experience lots of music and dance, including the unique Brazilian martial art dance of capoeira.

Day 10

Travel from Salvador to Boipeba

Leaving Salvador, you’ll travel by private car and launch to the beautiful island of Boipeba. There you’ll stay in a charming pousada and enjoy the delights of sand, sea, and fresh seafood—where the pace of life is relaxed, friendly and unplugged. The island is surrounded by mangroves, interspersed with lovely, white-sand beaches. And just offshore there are natural seawater pools where the snorkeling is exceptional.

Day 10-14

Boipeba

Each day, you decide whether you want to swim, snorkel, visit the nearby town or just relax and enjoy the perfect tranquility of sand and sea. After the energy and intensity of Rio and Salvador, Boipeba.

Day 14

Travel from Boipeba to Rio

Return to Salvador and connect with a flight to Rio. Private airport transfer to a lovely B & B in the historic Santa Teresa neighborhood.

Optional: Take in a show near the port, featuring samba and samba reggae music.

Day 15

Rio de Janeiro

A day at leisure to enjoy Santa Teresa’s quaint shops, artists’ studios and restaurants or perhaps visit Rios’s renown Botanical Gardens before heading to the airport for your flight home.

Day 15-16

Travel from Rio de Janeiro to Home

Airport transfer to return home on your overnight flight or extend your stay with a visit to Iguazu Falls or one of the many other attractions in Brazil.
