Separated from the rest of Mexico by the Sea of Cortez, Baja California Sur is a dry and sunny coastal destination. Time your trip to January and February to see whales in Magdelena and Loreto Bays. We skip the big resorts in favor of more relaxed destinations and include hiking, snorkeling and sea kayaking activities.
We believe that to travel responsibly, a portion of our tour cost should benefit communities where it’s most needed. For this trip, we will donate to DOCTORS WITHOUT BORDERS, a humanitarian-aid organization that has worked in Mexico and provides ongoing emergency medical aid around the world.
Bienvenidos! Your warm welcome to Mexico begins at the airport with a private car transfer to Loreto on the Sea of Cortez. Check into your hacienda-style hotel complete with a rooftop pool, located in the historic center of this peaceful seaside town.
ESPIRITU SANTO ISLAND & THE SEA OF CORTEZ
A full day in and around the sea starts with a motorboat ride to Espiritu Santo Island for swimming, snorkeling and sea kayaking. Paddle or motor through turquoise waters under the island’s spectacular volcanic cliffs, arriving at a beautiful beach for a picnic lunch and nature walk. After lunch, visit a large sea lion colony with the opportunity to snorkel among them. Return to Loreto for an evening at leisure.
After breakfast, depart for Magdalena Bay on the Pacific coast—to the calm breeding waters of the eastern gray whales. They spend summers feeding in the Bering Sea and migrate up to 12,500 miles to these warm waters every winter to calve. These friendly giants typically approach boats, which makes for an up-close and awe-inspiring wildlife encounter. In the evening, enjoy fresh seafood at your hotel or in the village.
Today is at leisure to explore lovely Magdalena Bay or choose to take another whale watching excursion. With pristine beaches, dolphins, sea lions and seabirds, this is a wonderful place to commune with nature. Afternoon transfer to the charming fishing village and artist community of Todos Santos, also on the Pacific coast.
Today’s half-day excursion will take you to visit three majestic desert canyon waterfalls on a hike through the Sierra de la Laguna Biosphere reserve. Return to Todos Santos for overnight.
The day is free to relax by the saltwater pool, beach comb miles of golden sand, row on the freshwater lagoon, or take bikes into the town of Todos Santos. Don’t miss evening stargazing back at the hotel.
Say farewell to Baja! Private car transfer to La Paz or Los Cabos airport for your departure flight home.
The above itinerary can be extended to spend more time in Baja, or combine with a visit to the Copper Canyon or elsewhere in Mexico. Ask for details.
