South Africa has much to offer the adventurous traveler. Start out exploring Cape Town with a guide who’ll take you through iconic neighborhoods. Then join a small group excursion along the Garden Route for a fun, active excursion that includes canoeing, hikes and more. End the group trip at Addo Elephant Reserve, a wonderful sanctuary for elephant fans. Depart the group and end with a more intimate safari experience in one of the Eastern Cape’s malaria-free ‘Big 5’ game reserves filled with abundant wildlife. This is a great trip for those who would enjoy a portion of the trip with a small group and a more physically active itinerary.

Day 1

Arrive Cape Town

On arrival at the airport, you will be met by our representative and transferred to your hotel by private car for check in at your hotel in the Seapoint neighborhood. Rest of the day at leisure.

Scenically beautiful, Cape Town is situated at the foot of Table Mountain and is surrounded by stunning vistas. Immerse yourself in the historic neighborhoods, unique gardens and art galleries as you enjoy the incredible foodie scene. Malay and African heritage is evident in the cuisine, traditions and entertainment, while the architecture often has a residue of Dutch, English and German style.

Day 2

Cape Town Discovery

Enjoy a full day with your guide exploring the city, its complex, rich history and surrounding areas, including the city center, Company’s Gardens, Cape Town Castle, Bo Kaap, Signal Hill and the V&A Waterfront. Your guide will help you get to know the city, its different cultures, history and geography. You’ll visit Robben Island and ride to the top of iconic Table Mountain in a cable car for magnificent views over Table Bay, Robben Island, The Cape Peninsula and Lions Head.

Day 3

Cape Town

Spend the day exploring Cape Town on your own. Visit one of the ‘Mother City’s’ local art galleries, or fine museums, such as the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa located on the V&A Waterfront, and the South African Museum, situated in the historic Company’s Gardens. Drop by one of the city’s weekend farmer’s markets, filled with produce as well as local eats and goods.

Optional guided tours are also available (not included). Consider a full day visit to the lesser known Elgin Wine region, or to the Cape Peninsula, where you’ll find penguins, the Cape of Good Hope and more.

Day 4

Cape Town – Cape Agulhas

The group departs from Cape Town early on Monday morning for Hermanus. We follow the scenic coastal road, stopping at Betties Bay to view a colony of endangered African penguins. Spend the afternoon in the scenic seaside resort town of Hermanus, famous for hundreds of Southern Right Whales during the whale season (July to November) and many shops, restaurants and markets. In the afternoon we will drive on to Cape Agulhas, the southern-most tip of Africa, where we visit a viewpoint known as the ‘real’ place where the Indian and Atlantic Oceans meet.

Optional (not included): During whale season, join a group whale watching boat trip.

Garden Route, Oudtshoorn, South Africa, Travel

Day 5

Cape Agulhas – Oudtshoorn

We travel to Oudtshoorn in the Little Karoo, known as the Ostrich Capital of the World, via spectacular Route 62, which is South Africa’s longest wine route. We will have a delicious lunch and wine tasting at a local winery before experiencing the subterranean beauty of the Cango Caves on a guided tour.

Day 6

Oudtshoorn – Sedgefield

After breakfast we head over the marvelous Outeniqua Mountain pass to explore Wilderness National Park by canoe. Enjoy a paddle up the Touw River through indigenous forest, where there is an abundance of bird life. Afterwards, take a short hike along a boardwalk, which will take us to a lovely waterfall and rock pools.

After canoeing, we will head to the town of Knysna via the scenic Lake District of the Garden Route. This up-market small town is filled with curios, restaurants and a waterfront – great for relaxing and shopping. After Knysna we head to the Knysna Heads viewpoint for some magnificent views over Knysna River estuary and the Indian Ocean. Late afternoon we explore Sedgefield with its expansive views and beaches.

Day 7

Sedgefield – Addo

After breakfast, we’re off to Tsitsikamma National Park. En-route we stop at Bloukrans Bridge to admire the view. Late morning will be spent in Tsitsikamma National Park with its unique combination of indigenous forest and beautiful Indian Ocean coastline. The park has a wide choice of activities for all, including hiking, crossing a suspension bridge and swimming. Late afternoon we will leave the Garden Route for ‘Big 5’ country, Addo.

Optional (not included): Get into the forest by zip-lining from one platform to another in Tsitsikamma’s indigenous rainforest!

Day 8

Addo – Eastern Cape Reserve

We will spend the morning driving Addo Elephant National Park exploring the 28,000 hectare National reserve with approximately 600 elephant. Other wildlife such as Cape buffalo, lion, black rhino, warthog, zebra, eland, kudu, and hartebeest may also be seen. After the morning game viewing, the group portion of the trip ends.

Continue on via private transfer to your lodge on one of the Eastern Cape’s malaria-free, “Big-5” reserves for a 2-night stay.

Day 9

Eastern Cape Reserve Safari

The awe-inspiring animals and landscapes of the Eastern Cape captivate the senses. Game drives happen twice daily. Coffee, tea and a snack are served at 6 am before the morning drive. Once back at the lodge, you’ll enjoy a hearty breakfast or brunch. You are then free to enjoy a bush walk, a spa treatment, go canoeing, have a swim or just relax.

After a refreshing afternoon tea, head out for the afternoon game drive. Once back at the lodge, a hot evening meal will be waiting!

Day 10

Eastern Cape – Port Elizabeth – Home

Enjoy one last early morning game drive, a hearty breakfast and then check out. Private transfer to the Port Elizabeth International Airport for flights home.
