Bali & Island Sail

Enjoy the best of lovely Bali combined with a multi-island sailing adventure. We’ll experience the culture of Bali through village walks, bike rides and temple visits as well as practice yoga with local masters. Then we’ll board the sailing schooner Ombak Putih for a 7-day cruise to pristine islands that are truly off the beaten path.

We believe that to travel responsibly, a portion of our tour cost should benefit the communities we visit. For this trip, we will donate to PATH, and Room to Read, NGOs we support that are having a very positive impact in Indonesia with respect to health and education.

Day 1-2

Depart for Bali

Depart U.S. Fly to Bali, losing one day due to time zone changes.

Day 3

Ubud, Bali

Arrival in Denpasar and transfer to our resort in the mountains near Ubud. Set in hillside gardens among lush tropical forest, it’s the perfect place to relax and unwind. This health and well-being center offers Asian-inspired traditional healing and features an organic garden and gourmet restaurant, and programs for yoga, meditation, stress relief, anti-aging, nature trekking and healthy cooking.

Day 4

Spiritual Tour to Gunung Kawi

Morning yoga practice. Today’s visit to the 11th century temple complex of Gunung Kawi offers special insight into Balinese Hindu practices. We start with a visit to a Balinese family and learn the steps to make an offering. After a priests blessing we have the opportunity to bathe in the holy water spring. Enjoy a typical Indonesian lunch with the family.

Day 5

Half-Day Cycling

After breakfast take a bicycle tour of the hilly countryside surrounding Ubud, past rice fields, villages, schools and temples. Lunch is included at a Balinese family compound. Afternoon is free to enjoy an optional massage or spa treatment.

Day 6

Half-Day Ubud Tour

Breakfast and morning yoga at the hotel. This afternoon, enjoy a guided tour of Ubud Palace, Saraswati Temple and the ARMA museum where we’ll see a Balinese dance performance and have dinner.

Day 7

Ubud — Board Ombak Putih

After breakfast we drive to Serangan in east Bali to board the 12-cabin Ombak Putih and begin our cruise through the lovely Lesser Sunda Islands. Tonight, we cross the ‘Wallace Line’ that demarks the Asiatic and Australian animal and plant species.

Day 8

LOMBOK ISLAND

Dock and depart by local coach to visit a pottery village, shop for textiles, attend a local dance performance and enjoy a real Sasak (indigenous people of Lombok) lunch. Back on the ship, we sail to the small island of Kondo, where we visit a coral conservation project and have a swim and snorkel to view the local reef.

Day 9

Satonda Island

Today we’ll set foot on the island of Satonda, with its stunning crater lake and beautiful coral gardens. At dusk we can see thousands of flying foxes that commute from the island to feed on the mainland, returning before first light the next day.

Day 10

Sumbawa Island

Arrive in the village of Wera, which is famous for its boat-building—and chat with the friendly locals. In the afternoon we sail to the uninhabited island of Banta, the first within the boundaries of Komodo National Park—a perfect place to swim and snorkel.

Day 11

Komodo Island

Wake up with the boat at anchor off Komodo Island. We go ashore at the ranger station for an early morning trek to find the fierce Komodo dragons. After returning to our schooner, we sail to ‘red-beach’ where we swim and snorkel over one of the richest reefs in eastern Indonesia.

Day 12

Rinca Island

Today we visit the ranger station of Loh Buaya, on an island known for its diverse wildlife. Apart from Komodo dragons, we may spot monkeys, wild buffaloes and deer. Hike to the hilltop for a spectacular view. The crew will prepare an evening BBQ on the beach where we can view the star-studded night sky.

Flores volcanoes

Day 13

Flores Island

Arrive at the volcanic island of Flores, and have a last early morning swim, before we say goodbye to the crew and disembark. Time permitting, we’ll visit a local market before transferring to the airport for return flight to Bali, connecting with homeward flight.
