Feed Your Soul:
A South African Journey

Join Leslie and Laurie Coaston, founders and owners of the Kingfish Café as they explore culinary hot spots, historical heritage sites and contemporary art in dynamic up and coming neighborhoods of Cape Town and Johannesburg. A three day safari adventure caps off this exciting journey. The sisters have always wanted to visit the African continent and are thrilled to offer this unique small tour to their friends and admirers. “We invite you to join us on an unforgettable and amazing exploration to South Africa.”

We believe that to travel responsibly, a portion of our tour cost should benefit the communities we visit. For this trip, our donation will go to a non-profit organization we support that is having a very positive impact around the world: PATH—who is working on HIV/AIDS screening, treatments as well as women’s health.

Cape Town

Day 3

Cape Town

Welcome to Cape Town! We’ll transfer to our hotel upon arrival and spend the remainder of the evening at leisure. Enjoy a glass of wine and a dip in the rooftop pool.

Cape Town is cited for its idyllic placement at the foot of Table Mountain. The stunning vistas become a constant background for a mixture of blocks filled with trendy modern buildings, historic neighborhoods, and unique gardens. Malay and African heritage is evident in the cuisine, traditions, and entertainment, while the architecture often has a residue of Dutch, English and German style.

Bo Kaap

Day 4

Robben Island and City Tour

After breakfast, we ferry to Robben Island to tour its extensive history. First settled and converted to a prison by the Dutch in the 17th century, the World Heritage Site then became a facility for the mentally ill and later a WWII outpost until its last inception as a maximum-security prison for political prisoners until 1991, where thousands of South Africa’s freedom fighters, including Nelson Mandela, were incarcerated for years.

Return to the mainland for a City Tour of Cape Town including Table Mountain. From Buitenkant Street to the Castle, it’s a treasure trove: fashion and jewelry boutiques, studios, quirky home décor, atmospheric pubs, craft beers and concept stores.

Day 5

Winelands of Cape Town

The fertile soil and Mediterranean climate of the Western Cape makes the Cape Winelands one of the most renowned wine-producing areas in the world – ideal for growing a wide range of noble vine varieties such as Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and Pinot Noir. Today we spend a full day exploring the Winelands, farm stalls, local hotspots, and estates.

Day 6

District 6 Museum & Cooking

We’ll spend the morning exploring the District 6 Museum, which works with the memories of a community on the outskirts of Cape Town where over 60,000 people were forcefully removed from the mid-1960’s to the mid-1980’s.

From here we travel to Langa Township to cook at a small cookery school that provides local residents the necessary skills to work in the kitchens of Cape Town’s hotels. We’ll sip on ginger beer while listening to a talk on African cuisine and culture before a hands-on cooking lesson where we’ll learn to prepare dishes like pap (similar to polenta), chakalaka, samp, and a typical meat stew. We’ll taste our delicious creations for lunch.

Zeitz Museum

Day 7

Zeitz Museum

This morning we visit the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art. Experience the work of three artists, two of which were recently in Seattle- Nandipha Mntambo (from Swaziland) and Edson Chagas (from Angola). We’ll tour the galleries of this cutting-edge institution.

This evening, enjoy dinner together at an internationally acclaimed restaurant.

Day 8

Cape Town to Johannesburg

Following breakfast, we’ll check-out and depart for Cape Town International Airport for our flight to Johannesburg.

South Africa’s economic hub bursts at the seams with a wealth of art, history, and culture. Johannesburg, the New York of Africa, is a fusion of sophistication and rustic, inner-city vibe born of Africa’s finest creative minds. Modern African art meets designer trend and the results are striking.

On arrival, we’ll be met at the airport and transfer to our hotel designed by star architect David Adjaye.

Day 9

Enjoy a guided tour of Newtown; the cultural precinct of the Joburg inner city, packed with museums, art galleries, craft workshops, dance studios, live music venues, nightclubs, bars, and restaurants. Since the mid-1900s, musicians, artists, poets, and dancers or all nationalities gather here, seeking relief from life under apartheid through creative expression.

Day 10

We’ll depart for the Soweto neighborhood after breakfast. Once home to South Africa’s most well-loved legend, it is an essential part of any visit to Johannesburg. We’ll visit Nelson Mandela’s house, the Hector Pieterson Museum, and Regina Mundi Cathedral – the importance of South Africa’s turbulent past and hard-won democracy is evident here.

Zebras at Watering Hole

Day 11-13

Journey to the Pilanesberg Game Reserve following breakfast, situated in the Bojanala Region in South Africa’s NW Province. This reserve covers almost 136,000 acres of wilderness and is home to Africa’s “Big Five.” Set on the crater of a long extinct volcano, this alkaline area is one of the world’s largest volcanic complexes of its kind. We will explore the steep koppies, thickly forested ravines, rolling grasslands, and lightly wooded areas on game drives and guided walks.

South African Pelicans
